PV Sindhu Brings Home India's First Gold At The World Badminton Championship

In a glorious first for India, P.V. Sindhu has bagged the Gold Medal at the World Badminton Championship held at Switzerland this year. This makes it Sindhu’s fifth medal at the prestigious Championship – and of course, the first Gold medal to her name.

After beating the World No. 3 Chen Yu Fei at the semi-final, Sindhu had the audience on the edge of their seats as she battled the World No. 4 Nozomi Okuhara for the gold in the Championship Final on 25th August. Sindhu made sure to win with a brilliant performance: with more than a few smashes in both matches, Sindhu held a wonderful rally with Okuhara. In the backdrop of a constant cheer of “Sindhu…Sindhu” from the audience, Sindhu beat her opponent with a score of 21-7, 21-7 in just 36 minutes. At the end of the match, Sindhu thanked her coach Pullela Gopichand as well as her support staff. When asked to address her historic victory, Sindhu said, “I dedicate this medal to my mother. It’s her birthday today”.

Hailing from Hyderabad, the 24-year old Badminton World Champion has added many a feather to India’s cap. Not only is P.V. Sindhu the first Indian to win a gold at the World Badminton Championship, but she is also the first Indian woman to have won an Olympic Silver medal.

With medals from the Olympics, Asian Games as well as Badminton World Federation under her belt, Sindhu is certainly paving the way for India to lead the badminton game on the international arena.
