Enjoy Three Centuries Of Bengali Art At This Exhibition In Kolkata

If you are an art lover in Kolkata, or have been dying to check out the works by some of the most eminent Bengali artists, look no further. The iconic Old Currency building on the south eastern corner of BBD Bag (Dalhousie Square) has been restored by the Archaeological Survey of India to host an art exhibition showcasing works by some of the most prominent Bengali artists like Nandalal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee, Jogen Chowdhury, Biren De, Nemai Ghosh among others. This exhibition titled Ghare Baire | The World, The Home and Beyond has been commissioned by India’s Ministry of Culture, and curated by DAG, a leading art gallery who has partnered with the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Delhi.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 11 January 2020, Ghare Baire provides a glimpse of the richness, diversity and depth of Bengal’s art over the centuries. The exhibition is sectioned into 12 broad categories, showcasing over 600 artworks of which the majority are from the DAG collection and 19 important works from the National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi. The art of Bengal from the 18th to the 20th century is divided into early Bengal indigenous art, realism and academic art in Bengal. The exhibition covers photographs, woodblocks, paintings and more, from the the different art movements in Bengal. It comprises art from the Bengal Renaissance, as well as lesser known art forms like oleographs and Kalighat paintings.
