Meet The 5 Indian Pioneers In The 2020 Class Of Young Global Leaders

The Forum of Young Global Leaders aims to create a dynamic global community of exceptional people with the vision and courage to drive positive change in the world.

Their growing membership of more than 1,300 members and alumni includes public officials, business innovators, artists, educators, technology developers, journalists and activists.

The organisation is aligned with the World Economic Forum’s mission to encourage public-private cooperation among professionals from varied fields, in order to facilitate global entrepreneurship. Representing more than 100 nationalities, Young Global Leaders are united by the belief that the urgent problems of today present an opportunity to forge a better future across sectors, generations and borders.

Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, created the Forum of Young Global Leaders in 2004 to help the world meet increasingly complex and interdependent problems.

His vision was to create a proactive multi stakeholder community of the world’s next-generation leaders to inform and influence decision-making and mobilize transformation. He also envisioned engaging in earnest dialogue and friendships across cultures to bridge differences, foster innovative thinking and new ways of collaboration in order to shape a more positive, peaceful and prosperous society.

The Forum of Young Global Leaders (YGLs) is a community of over 800 leaders from all walks of life, who operate as a force for good to overcome barriers that stand in the way of progress. They aim to capitalize on diverse talents, experiences and networks to facilitate inclusive development and growth.

The Young Global Leaders Forum welcomes 115 members from different parts of the world for the Class of 2020. This year’s class includes an Olympian and World Cup winner, the youngest Prime Minister of Finland, an accomplished and pioneering digital journalist in Africa, an advocate of social justice and reform in Nepal and a human rights lawyer fighting for an inclusive society in Ethiopia and beyond.

The five Indians in the 2020 class include :

I. Gaurav Gupta

Gaurav Gupta is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Zomato, a pioneering food technology start-up. He launched the table reservation business and scaled it up across- India, UAE, Australia. Besides leading advertising sales globally, Gupta played an instrumental role in launching subscription service Zomato Gold, which has now become one of the fastest growing paid membership programs.

II. Swapan Mehra

Swapan Mehra is the Chief Executive Officer of Iora Ecological Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and is a global leader in climate action and ecosystem conservation in India. His path-breaking work on finance, technology and governance-led interventions in community forestry has been lauded at forums such as the MIT Climate Co-lab, Norway REDD exchange and the UNFCCC COP. He has led international carbon finance teams at AES, Evolution Markets and EcoSecurities and has leveraged over $10 billion of public and $75 million in private environmental finance. His tech-led work on conserving 10 million hectares of forests is shaping national strategies and policies in India. He advises many key government ministries and serves on the Assam Chief Minister’s Climate Taskforce.

III. Vinati Mutreja

Vinati Mutreja is Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of specialty chemical company Vinati Organics, where she has overseen an increase in revenue and market capitalization. She has been innovative in selecting chemical processes and products that are environmentally attractive. The jury of The Economic Times Family Business Awards chose Mutreja as the Outstanding Woman Business Leader for 2018. She was also named as part of Forbes India W-Power Trailblazers 2019 and The Economic Times Women Ahead 2019 list.

IV. Byju Raveendran

A teacher by choice and an entrepreneur by chance, Byju Raveendran launched BYJU’S Learning App in India in 2015 and has helped 42 million students learn better.

V. Tara Singh Vachani

Tara Singh Vachani is the Managing Director of Antara Senior Living, focused on improving the lives of seniors. Antara Senior Living is the first Indian venture creating vibrant residential communities that offer lifestyle with life care. Tara is also engaged with the Max India Foundation.
