Launched with an intent to give hope in bleak times and showcase the power of compassion, the latest song by Ritviz, SickFlip and duo Seedhe Maut titled, ‘Roshni’ is an optimistic composition. Highly anticipated and teased, this music video slowly opens into a tale of loss and love in an era of loneliness.
The music video by new-age electronica artist SickFlip, popular producer/singer Ritviz and India’s finest hip-hop duo Seedhe Maut is a collaboration which has lead to the creation of a film with a lasting visual scope that can be as much a dance floor favourite as it is a message of hope. Alleviating our collective responses to our current pandemic the song and music video creates a sense of comfort. An amalgamation of Ritviz’s Indian classically trained vocals combined with SickFlip’s organic approach towards production, topped with Seedhe Maut’s poignant verse has created a sonic atmosphere that feels like an embrace.
On 19th June, Sickflip, Ritviz and Seedhe Maut premiered the music video for ‘Roshni.’ The music video begins with a young woman in therapy. Through the course of the music video, we see her running–-in hues of purple and blue–away from feelings of loss and abandonment. The almost cinematic portrayal of not fitting in, being an outsider or losing once valued relationships all intermix to create the vitality that courses through this collaborative effort. Lyrics from the chorus, “Kabhi aaye kabhi jaaye / Kabhi laaye kabhi gaaye / Apni mann kii baatein naa kabhi keh saki” delves into the fickle impermanence of happiness and life. What does ‘Roshni’ inherently symbolise to many of us; is it light, positivity or the potential of reassurance a group of supportive people can provide to an individual?
Seedhe Maut’s razor-sharp rhymes, intricately tainted with a rebellious sense of identity, directs the song towards an inner-monologue. The lyrics “Ijaazat dete nahi hai sanskaar / Ke Banadu mai kudko jo mann me hai” explodes with a rueful contemplation of the less empathetic connections we make in life; within family circles or between the lolls of friendship. Our values, norms and the smaller social tissues are inbred with a destructive force that Seedhe Maut challenges with his vocal vivacity. This is also reflected in the music video when our young protagonist tears down polaroid pictures of her friends. A scene that cements the loss of once-cherished memories and relationships.
At the end of the music video, in a cathartic scene, we see our young heart-broken protagonist reach out while being glazed in soft light. Ultimately, finding her sense of self when she is encircled by love and support from people who honestly cherish and value her. The music flawlessly meshes with the visuals of the video to outline our protagonist’s journey, embedding a lasting sense of hope.
