Today’s millennial pop/hip-hop/ electronic-music dominated landscape offers little room to artists who draw inspiration from traditional music styles. Rapid commercialisation of music has led most modern producers and artists to switch their style and align their tunes with pop trends. Hence, witnessing the sound of homegrown artists drawing inspiration from indigenous roots, in today’s competitive atmosphere, is nothing short of an urban phenomenon.
One such collective comprising Delhi’s trap/moombahton sensation, Su Real, Reggae spearhead and founder of the Reggae Rajah’s, General Zooz, alongside India’s undisputed Dancehall queen, Jahnavi Sheriff, continues to woo audiences with the Indo-Jamaican influence in their music. Their new single ‘Indian Wine’ is more than just an upbeat dance number with catchy lyrics. The unique sound composition obtained by layering Jamaican-style vocals over an indo-inspired trap beat, serves as a catalyst, cementing this homegrown collective’s cultural footprint. Its catchy lyrics and reference to the various communities make it the ideal anthem for India’s reggae/dancehall community as well as the desi diaspora worldwide.
The video for the single is shot at the iconic site of Humayun’s tomb in Delhi. Breathtaking dancehall moves in juxtaposition with riveting Bharatnatyam steps make the project an ideal confluence of the two cultures. While Smash Dem Crew’s blazing siren aka Ms Sheriff, with her entourage, enthrals viewers with their explosive moves, their contemporaries, who are Bharatnatyam queens themselves, win us over with their grace.
Born from the collective’s shared vision of creating a pro-dancehall and pro-reggae community while retaining its Indian roots, Indian Wine is an ideal song for desi Reggae lovers. Its unmistakable Jamaican influence yet subtle Indian tone is what gives Indian Wine a peculiar edge. The first of its kind, the music produced by Su Real and General Zooz complemented by jaw-dropping performances by Jahnavi’s crew, works as a pioneering force in India’s budding dancehall/Reggae community.
