Giving Gender Inclusivity The Green Light: Mumbai Features Female Figures On Street Lights

Paving the way towards gender equality and social inclusivity, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced traffic signals in Mumbai with female pedestrians on display. The typical male silhouette is now replaced with one clad with a triangular dress to represent a woman.

A LiveMint report informs us that Mumbai is the first city in India to have taken this step, which has been taken under its citywide project called ‘Mumbai Culture Spine’, headed by the state’s Cabinet Minister for Tourism and Environment Aaditya Thackeray.

In conversation with Reuters, the assistant commissioner of Mumbai’s municipal corporation said, “The signage reflects the character of the city ... that it believes in gender equality and promotes women’s empowerment.” He also mentioned that this is just the beginning.

Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter to announce the installation of these street lights in and around Dadar, and also acknowledged the efforts of those behind it. United Nations (UN Women) applauded this initiative too.
