The dangers of deforestation have been discussed with a greater part of the lot for a long time now. We are more or less aware of consequences like loss of habitat for various creatures, soil erosion, and reduced rainfall, amongst others. Ironically, however, for the most part, the popular discourse has seemed to limit itself as a concept in the pages of those books.

The Story Of Kaveri, a short film written by Vinod Lal Heera Eshwer and directed by Ayappa for Reforest India puts across humanity’s shortcomings towards Mother Nature in a raw and hard-hitting manner. It narrates the tale of demon Shoorapadma and how he stopped the rains from falling, thus bringing about immense suffering.

The lore goes that following this, Lord Shiva granted the birth of river Kaveri — she flowed from Kodagu, healing the earth on her way. She brought with her a bounty of greenery and life until her own children began to subject her to the evils of human nature. Resulting in a situation similar to before her birth, Kaveri repents her children’s wrongdoings till date.

The short film is one to leave you thinking. We also hope that it inspires you to take action.

Packed with power, meaning, and wonderful storytelling, The Story Of Kaveri is available to watch in Kannada, Tamil, and Kodava.
