HG Streams: Film On A Haryana Man Who Married A Gang Rape Survivor

Filmmaker and journalist Vibha Bakshi’s documentary, Son Rise, which won National Awards for Best Film (non- feature) and Best Editing (non-feature) in 2019, is a harrowing reportage on female infanticide in Haryana and its adjoining areas. A documentary on female subjugation and repression, it puts men in a spot to question their culpability, as well as their efforts to eradicate the situation.

The idea for the documentary occurred to her when Vibha got to know about a farmer in Haryana who, having married a gang rape survivor, was fighting for her justice. With the help of the police, they were eventually able to find the man, Jitender Chattar, and thus, was born the idea of Son Rise.

The documentary is not one that sensationalises the wrongdoings of men. Instead, it aims to include men in the conversation around a safer and a more gender-sensitive world.
