In the cramped streets of Asia’s largest slum, Dharavi is a percussion junk band called ‘Dharavi Rocks’ – drum barrels, plastic bottles, paint buckets, metal lids, wooden crates, and sticks line the corner for their performance.
In conflict-stricken Kashmir, youth like Ahmer and Ali Saffudin emerged as prolific voices of resistance against state-sponsored violence and oppression on the indigenous freedom movement.
Despite brimming with talent, cultural niches like the hills of Nagaland have long been shrouded in a sense of mystery.
While every nook and cranny in India has so much creativity and talent to offer, there are only a few that get the recognition they deserve and not many are even aware of the opportunities available.
For a while, we, at Homegrown, have been toying with the idea of evolving our platform into a space that inspires musicians to believe that their paths are not limited and that there is a world out there where the music industry is thriving. Our sole motivation behind this attempt is to shift the needle in the Indian music industries – to bring out hidden talents and explore subcultures, and this is exactly where the idea of Homegrown Music comes to fruition.
HG Music has been created to function as a platform for emerging South-Asian musicians and your one-stop destination for all things music. At the flux of street culture, emerging talents and new sounds, through HG Music, we are looking at redefining the South Asian soundscape.
The aim is to deep-dive into the creative process, re-imagine the musical landscape, and create an inclusive space for artists from different genres. Be it the rap music from the North East, protest music from J&K, indie music or folk music from India or the lesser-known subcultures that are making a mark, we are exploring the undercurrents of the Indian music scene and bringing them to you.
HG Music Launch will be a commune of musicians and pioneers who will teach you the basics that you might not get access to elsewhere. We hope for it to evolve into a culture of creation, collaboration, and discovery through an exchange of thoughts and ideas.
To celebrate the launch of Homegrown Music, we have lined a diverse set of workshops and masterclasses across different aspects of creating, producing music, experts from the music business, those who’ve been there and done it all. To guide you through the A-Z of the music business.
What’s in store for you: diverse sessions and workshops around music and its business, creating music and songwriting by leading names within the industry within the country; an immersive audio/visual experience by Spryk that’s here to change up the digital experiential game for the better, a surreal, music, and AI-driven experience.
It all goes down on 27 and 28 February 2021, so right about now would be a good time to register!
Here is a lineup of the artists and the workshops they will be conducting:
Ritnika Nayan: Basics of Digital Distribution
Director of CD Baby’s India operations, Ritnika Nayan will be at the fore of our ‘Basics of Digital Distribution’ session. With an experience of 19 years in the music industry, she has worked with artists like Maroon 5, Nickelback, Guns & Roses, Nucleya, Advaita and also consulted on festivals like Sula Fest, Ziro festival of Music, Wonderflip fest, and more. As the the owner of the company, Music Gets Me High as well, she is the perfect person to tell you about how to get your music heard by more people via streaming, digital distribution, sync licensing, and YouTube monetisation.
The workshop will be helpful to artists, artist managers, labels and more in understanding the pros and cons of label deals, the process of uploading and distributing music to platforms like Apple and Spotify via a platform like CD Baby and what promotional and monetisation tools like pre-save Spotify campaigns, advertising, YouTube monetisation, Content ID can offer.

Tejas Nair aka Spryk: An Introduction to Transmedia Storytelling
Mumbai-based musician, DJ, curator, and interdisciplinary artist Tejas Nair’s electronic act ‘Spryk’ is the ideal example of the interaction between music, technology and humanity. Whether it is his awe-inspiring immersive visual installations, audio-visual live performances or club-ready releases, he has managed to re-imagine the way music and art interact with technology to create an entirely unique narrative. In his ‘An Introduction to Transmedia Storytelling: Engaging Audiences With Narrative Worlds & Emerging Technologies’ session you will get an insight into how to reimagine the canvas for storytelling, create your own medium and collaborate in transmedia.

Kamakshi Khanna: Songwriting 101
New Delhi-based singer-songwriter Kamakshi Khanna is well known within the indie circuit and has performed at popular music festivals like NH7 Weekender, VH1 Supersonic, and Kasauli’s Rhythm N Blues Festival amongst others. Her ‘Songwriting 101’ session will be a breakdown of the greatest songs of all time and understanding why we love them! The workshop will talk about the importance of connecting with your authentic self, how to write your first song, overcoming writer’s block, finding a balance with joy and judgement and exploring your artistic identity. The event is open to all singers, songwriters, producers and musicians of all ages and styles.

Spryk : APEX
Tejas Nair’s electronic act Spryk will be back at 7 pm for an audiovisual performance of his upcoming album Apex– a seven-track music and art exploration project. At the forefront of this exploration is Nair’s own journey in questioning and redefining the role of an independent electronic musician – marrying the huge technological advances made in the audio-visual format and adapting them to create critically acclaimed projects such as Stranger Movements (in collaboration with Big Fat Minimalist) and Beyond Within, a virtual reality experience produced in collaboration with Tessellate Studio.

Alokananda Dasgupta: The Art Of Storytelling Through The Medium Of Music
Film composer and music director Alokananda Dasgupta whose original musical compositions include the background score for Netflix Original Series Sacred Games and AK vs AK is a brute force to reckon with. Her experience, as well as knowledge of scoring, is unmatched. ‘The Art Of Storytelling Through The Medium Of Music’ session will delve deep into this evolution to understand how music can be used to tell the story the best way possible.

KAMP1 with SuitStatic: Creative Sampling And Audio Sampling Techniques
Head faculty at Kamp1, Ketan Sharma aka SuitStatic is a music producer and singer-songwriter based out of New Delhi, India. His sound explores rhythm, groove, and soul across genres and styles. His previous single was signed by tastemakers like Spinnin’ Records and hit over 4 million plays on Spotify. His tracks have been topping Beatport & Spotify charts and been played at festivals such as Tomorrowland & Ultra Music Festival. His tracks have also received support from the likes of Tiesto, Axwell Ingrosso, David Guetta, Benny Benassi, Dannic, Thomas Gold and many more. His ‘Mystery Sauce: A Showcase Of Creative Sampling And Audio Sampling Techniques’ session will guide you through creative sampling and audio sampling techniques to bring sounds from mundane objects to life – objects that come alive from a mystery box.

Karan Kanchan : How To Make A Beat.
Multi-genre (trap and bass music) Mumbai-based record producer Karan Kanchan is inspired by Japanese pop culture and music, the influences of which are reflected in his unique and distinct style which is unlike any other in the Indian trap scene. For his workshop, he will be conducting a session on ‘How To Make A Beat: A Step-By-Step Breakdown’ for all emerging artists. At merely 23, he has performed with the likes of Naezy, signed to Divine’s Gully Gang Entertainment Records, and performed at Sunburn.

Three Oscillators: Project Breakdown
Three Oscillators is a solo project by music producer Brij Dalvi. The sound falls under the realm of glitch, sci-fi influences, and the future. Seamlessly shifting through genres within these attributes, Three Oscillators is a diverse mix of otherworldly samples and dreamy sounds. For the ‘Project Breakdown’ session, Dalvi is going to be breaking down the tune-transcendence from his bare recordings compilation, Mental Movie Theatre.
