2021 has been a year of one too many breakthroughs for the Indian music community. By pushing several boundaries, the Indian music scene has definitely gained momentum as an independent entity with its own identity and calibre. From being a dawning community into a thriving industry producing multi-faceted artists and creators, the Indian music space has only continued to grow in strength and number.

With extremely promising releases and cutting-edge productions, some of 2021’s music releases have also been accompanied by offbeat album art that has helped develop a distinct identity for breakthrough artists and producers.

Homegrown takes a look at some of the best music artwork that has emerged in 2021.

I. Sophomore Sweetheart By Sunflower Tape Machine

The indie-pop track released by Chennai’s breakthrough artist Aryaman Singh has caught on, not only as an earworm but also for its vibrant and playful cover art that is hard to miss. The cover art which was designed by artist Malavika Natesh features a unique juxtaposition of spaces and objects that deliver the sublime montage of happy moments that the track hopes to recreate.

II. Thapille Thangachi by Casteless Collective

Lauded as India’s largest political band, Casteless Collective has been pioneering a revolution that is a medley of dissent and music. The band’s latest single, ‘Thapille Thangachi’, which went live early this year is represented by powerful cover art that is mindful of the visual tone that the track intended to deliver. Designed by artist Shiva Nallperumal, the cover art aptly represents the trope of ‘message music’.

III. Owl’s Eye by Rachel Singh

This Mumbai based singer-songwriter and visual artist recreates familial nostalgia through her latest indie track. The track, which brims with emotions and childhood nostalgia, is accompanied by powerful visuals which trace the journey of the singer’s family. The particular emotion is also captured aptly in the cover art which is a collection of family photos.

IV. Neeye Oli by Shan Vincent De Paul

Amongst 2021’s rising artists, Shan Vincent De Paul is undeniably on the radar of emerging diasporic musicians. His most popular release of 2021, ‘Neeye Oli’ stands strong in its messaging, vision, and also its vibrant cover art. The cover art which features various facets of the artist’s motherland was created by digital artist, Luis Toledo and is also being sold as a collaborative NFT as part of a larger series on Voice.com.

V. Enemy by Easy Wanderlings
