Cinema and television are perceived as the preferred forms of media for millions of Indians. From owning one of the biggest film industries to setting the tone for sparking a new dialogue in the mainstream; our appreciation for the creation and consumption of cinema knows no bounds. Perhaps one of the most engaging topics that ensues much-needed conversations is the portrayal of sexuality on the big screen. While there are many issues around sexuality that have been addressed, the connotation, however, has not always been positive.

At Homegrown we urge you to watch these gems of film and television that focus on engaging a healthy conversation around sexual positivity.

I. Lust Stories

With OTT platforms delivering come of age content that explores mature and current themes, The face of Indin cinema seems to be moulding for the better. Lust Stories is one such show that engages in a dialogue about sexual desires and the liberating sentiment of owning them. Directed by Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar, and Anurag Kashyap the film is a must-watch and has proved to be a hit among Indian audiences.

II. Sex Education

You’ve likely seen this one already, but if you haven’t, you must. It explores a very interesting scenario: that of the son of a sex therapist beginning to sell sex therapy in his school while simultaneously struggling to masturbate himself. It’s not only educational but also sheds light on the possible negative side of lack of sex education among young adults, making it an incredibly interesting watch.

III. Christiane Amanpour: Sex and Love Around the World

CNN’s star journalist and host Christian Amanpour is on a rather interesting assignment in this docu-series that takes her to six global cities to explore how its natives celebrate love and sex. Her journey takes her to cities like Accra, Berlin, Tokyo, Shanghai, Beirut and even India, where she talks to Delhi couples about sex before marriage, PDA, and arranged v/s love marriage.

IV. OK Kanmani

Sexual desire is monopolised within the male section of society. It is treated as an aspiration for men while a measure of character for women especially when it comes to premarital sex. OK Kanmani features as a pathbreaking story that deconstructs this notion around sexual desire and premarital sex.

V. Vicky Donor

Vicky Donor breaks the Indian cinematic scene with a much-needed debunking of the stigma attached to infertility and sperm donation and captures societal stereotypes perfectly. Shoojit Sircar’s film is an accurate portrayal of internalized shame attached to fertility and has been a pivotal movie in shifting perspectives.
