If we simplistically want to put what the most important aspect of art is, it is perhaps to feel something. As we go about our lives and their varied and tumultuous range of emotions, art functions as a respite; a form of catharsis for both the creator and the watcher; a way for us to feel seen, to feel a sense of being understood. In that sense, there is something characteristically defining about how human emotions get translated onto frames. Any frame that allows us an insight into human emotions then also allows us to look into the mirror for clues, suggestions and warnings about who, what and how we are; allowing us to float in the ordinary magic of everyday moments and feelings.
A lover of photography, observation, human emotions and mathematics, Mumbai-based documentary photographer and creative director Tarun Chouhan hails from a small village on the outskirts of Barmer City, Rajasthan, and imbibed his love for mathematics and human beings from his father who was a maths teacher. A keen observer with an interest in documenting humans and their ever-present complexities, his frames often capture quotidian moments in metropolises like Mumbai.
Mastering the art of catching moments where the subjects in the frame interact in exciting ways, his images are characterized by contrast, lights, a bit of surrealism, and human beings. His latest photoseries that captured our attention is that of two lovers on the beach. There is a warmth, a sense of loving and comfort that shines through the frames. Existing mostly in sepia tones, there is also an inherent romanticism in the way his photographs present themselves and in the range of human emotions shouting through and bursting in colour even if there is a lack of apparent vibrant colour in the frames.
A conceptual shoot, that is conceptualised, styled and photographed by Chouhan himself, it features Harshika Kewalramani and Chetan Swaroop Tirdia. Of the photoseries, Chouhan says, “In this series, the girl meets her lover for whom she has written many letters but has never delivered or met her. The lover is a poet, articles are published in his magazines and newspapers and after reading the articles, the girl feels that those articles have been written for her and she also knows that the poet likes the ocean very much and from that, she becomes that poet. In search of her, every sea of the city reaches every beach to meet her and finds her on different seashores there. At last, she meets her boyfriend and she gives him a letter on their first meeting. As if they are made for each other, this is their first meeting, the story is yet to come.”
