Magnetism is, in the simplest of terms, how two objects can come together through the movement of their energies. As electrons move and spin in sync, they generate a magnetic field, and when circumstances align, the two attract. This intricate dance extends far past the realm of pure science; just as magnets connect once they fall into each other’s orbits, we sometimes feel that inexplicable pull in our chest towards someone whose energy just feels right.

Singer-songwriter Akshara captures this feeling in her latest single, ‘Orbit’. The ethereal track pulls us in with soft piano chords, Indian classical vocalisations, and the iconic movie star Rekha’s reflections on her growth into the woman she is today. As the beat kicks in, Akshara takes us on a lyrical and sonic journey, emerging as the magnetic character she told Homegrown she looked up to all her life.

“I idolised so many such women growing up, who balanced work and home and made it seem so effortless. You realize as you get older, it truly comes from owning the world around you and deciding to attract the right people, opportunities and energy into your aura and your life.”

The song’s chorus repeats the words, “Ye duniya hai meri,”–the world is mine– like a mantra, cultivating healing energy as dreamy synths blossom and the song builds to a true dance-pop sound. Akshara told us she “wanted to write about what it feels like when you meet someone whose energy is so magnetic, you can’t help but fall into their orbit,” and yet we find ourselves falling into hers, entranced by her rich vocal colour and otherworldly sound.

““Yeh duniya hai meri” is a reminder to all women to set aside what anyone tells them, and believe in their potential.”

As a homegrown musician, Akshara is spearheading a new era of Desi pop. Like ‘Orbit’, much of her discography fuses Indian classical elements with RnB and alternative EDM, crafting a signature sound that sets her apart from her contemporaries.

While her music is by no means traditional, Akshara’s vocal inflexions are unmistakably Indian, diving into complicated melodies and riffs that are only achievable for a classically trained singer. This incorporation of her culture doesn’t feel gimmicky or inauthentic; instead, it’s a genuine musical expression of her background that only adds to her work’s transcendent feeling.

“I grew up in India for 13 years and then moved to the States. I spoke fluent Hindi and Kannada at home, so the duality of being a real Indian immigrant is reminiscent in my sound.”

‘Orbit’ invites us into a beautiful sonic world of Akshara’s creation. The magnetic force she sings of isn’t necessarily one between two lovers, but rather, a narration of the relationship she’s building with us, her listeners. We’ve fallen into her orbit and have no desire to leave, ready for her next musical venture to bring us even closer to her core as a musician.
