The story of rock music in Pakistan is the story of a generation pushing past polite pop toward something rougher, more impatient, and alive with possibility. In the 1990s, bands such as Vital Signs and Junoon emerged as pioneers of the sound now called Pakistani rock — Vital Signs laying groundwork in the late 1980s, and Junoon transforming the landscape by fusing electric guitars with Sufi-inflected lyrics has always lingered in the South Asian cultural memory even as the media changed and tastes shifted.
In Karachi today, a band called Dulhay Mian carries in its veins both that legacy and a fresh new expression of it. Dulhay Mian is a modern rock band from Pakistan, fronted by vocalist and guitarist Nadir Shahzad, formerly of the band Sikandar Ka Mandar. The band is known for its energetic performances and a sound that blends alternative and indie rock with socio-political commentary, drawing comparisons to Father John Misty for its comedic and satirical style. The current lineup includes Nadir Shahzad, Mubashir Taimoor on lead guitar, Hasan Raza on bass, and Hyder Ali on drums.
Their genre is rooted in modern rock, alternative and indie rock with socio-political undertones. Whereas their sound thrives on high-energy performances; the blend of alternative and indie rock is soulful, potent, with powerful vocals and electrifying instrumentals. The band has been performing across the country, and played the IVS Mela in September and Live at District 19 in Karachi in September this year, both landmark autumn sets.
Their latest single 'Mojza,' released in April, came out of Karachi and emphasised their high-energy live reputation and their alternative/experimental edge. Their debut track 'Aag' threw in post-hardcore, grunge/emo leanings; while the sophomore single 'Khalil Sahab' went the opposite direction slowing things down into a melancholic but still rock-driven mood.
Through their music, the band isn't just tapping into the nostalgia of Pakistani rock but also giving it new shapes and different emotional tones, exploring the genre in a new and exciting way. Under Dulhay Mian’s stewardship, Urdu poeticism becomes modern, still piercing through your heart, with a lot of soul, but also style.
