Steve McCurry's Breathtaking Photographs Of India Taken Over Decades

His photograph of a young Afghan girl with dazzling green eyes remains one of the most recognised images in the world, ensuring an image-making icon like him requires no further introduction. Having travelled the world documenting major political and social events since the 1970s, his passion, curiosity and keen aesthetic eye have resulted in a visual repository of history that's quite unparalleled, thanks to an aesthetic that remains unique to his own style.

But few bodies of work have been as compelling as his visual documentation of India; a country he's forged a long-lasting and intimate relationship with over anywhere between 60 to 80 visits (he says he's lost count) since 1978.

“What I love about India, and what keeps me coming back is the depth of the culture here, the visual chaos, the endless variety of dramatic cheek-by-jowl juxtapositions it affords: modern and tradition, the haves and the have-nots, the usual and the bizarre,” McCurry told Outlook.
