According to one folklore, the spider taught the tribes of Northeast India how to weave fine, gossamer-like textiles. According to another, it was a goddess. Whatever the origin, whether insectile or divine, the indigenous textile craft traditions of Northeast India have a long and many-layered history. Jarsang is a contemporary fashion label that celebrates this textile heritage through artisanal craftsmanship and modern storytelling rooted in the region's rich cultural heritage and sustainable ethos.
Co-founded by Assam-based twin brothers and designers Rajdeep and Joydeep Pegu — proud members of the Mising tribe — Jarsang pays homage to the Mising people's intangible cultural heritage and indigenous textile knowledge systems, one carefully crafted apparel at a time.
“There are countless cultures, crafts, and communities in India, whose narratives haven’t yet received the visibility they deserve. Fashion, we believe, can be a powerful lens through which people discover stories, identities, and traditions that often go unnoticed. Through our crafted pieces, we hope to offer a window into these worlds, blending our heritage with a design language that feels honest to who we are, all while embodying a modern elegance that’s uniquely our own.”
Rajdeep and Joydeep Pegu, Co-Founders of Jarsang
The Pegu brothers' bond with craft is deeply rooted in family and tradition. From watching their grandmother who was highly involved with the craft, to seeing that knowledge passed down to their mother, they grew up surrounded by the beauty, complexity, and soul of their traditional craft. Through Jarsang, they not only aspire to showcase the sophistication of this craft but also aim to empower indigenous artisans, preserve ancestral knowledge, and inspire the next generation of the community to carry this legacy forward.
Jarsang's commitment to sustainability starts from the very beginning of the textile weaving process: sourcing the yarn. The label is committed to using cruelty-free, exclusive yarns made with Eri silk — a wild, sustainable silk thread produced without killing the silkworm. Every Jarsang apparel is developed entirely from scratch, starting from spinning yarns to weaving the fabric and finally constructing the garment using traditional hand-weaving techniques on handlooms, honoring the heritage and meticulous skill of Assam's textile artisans — a slow, labour-intensive process which ensures complete in-house control over quality and ethics.
Jarsang showcased its debut collection in Paris during the Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. "For two young designers building something from the ground up, it was surreal to see our work in an international setting. This felt like a step in the right direction toward our mission of preserving and sharing our culture through our creations," Rajdeep and Joydeep say. "It was also a sign that our crafted pieces were able to convey our story, and that our cultural narrative is being acknowledged and appreciated on an international stage — a meaningful step forward in our journey to bring the rich cultural identity of Northeast India to the global stage."
