Animals Affected By Kerala Floods — What’s Being Done And How You Can Help
The Indian Express

At present, Kerala is experiencing the worst floods it has in the last 100 years. With over 300 fatalities and more than 1,500 relief camps been set up to aid the thousands who have been displaced from their homes, Humane Society International/India (HSI/India) is working towards evacuating and rehabilitating the animals affected by the floods.

HSI/India is a charity for animals, which has a team of six experts deployed in Nilambur and Tirur, regions in Kerala have been the most severely affected by the floods. HSI/India is working towards rescuing dogs, cats and other animals that have been stranded or abandoned during evacuation. They are doing this in collaboration with the Government of Kerala and the Natural Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Animals are being provided shelter in government veterinary hospitals across Kerala. This is being facilitated by the joint effort of the state’s collector of the districts and government veterinary hospitals and HSI/India.

“Kerala is at a standstill right now, with many areas experiencing total devastation. Our team is encountering many animals who have perished. However, we are still finding abandoned dogs and were recently able to rescue 13 dogs and a tiny kitten who we found trembling as the floods raged around him. We are bracing ourselves for when the floods subside and we can finally access some of the areas currently totally cut off, where we may find more animals we’re desperately hoping to reach.” This statement was made by Sally Varma, HSI/India’s Education and Awareness Officer, in a report issued by the organisation.

You can contribute to HSI/India’s efforts by providing financial assistance through their website, to help continue their rescue operation and provide necessary veterinary medical care and support to the animals affected by the Kerala floods.
