Not only was she Kerala’s first woman actor, but she was also a rebellious one at that. P.K Rosy’s legacy may have been short-lived but the dialogue that she started in her act of subverting caste-driven norms and narratives on cinema has certainly triggered a revolutionary movement for an industry that continues to revere her work.

Honouring PK Rosy’s legacy this Dalit History Month is Tamil director Ranjith Pa’s organisation, the Neelam Cultural Foundation, which in collaboration with the ongoing Vaanam Arts & Literary Festival has launched a 3-day-long film festival to commemorate and celebrate Dalit culture in cinema.

The screenings will be taking place at Chennai’s Prasad Lab Preview Theatre between the 9th and the 11th of April, 2022. Entry is free but will be restricted to a limited capacity on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The curation of films aim to highlight Dalit culture, lifestyle, struggles, and challenges as told by Tamil Dalit filmmakers. Other screenings also involve films in Hindi, Malayalam, and other regional languages.
