Our digital age consists of instant gratification, Google quick fixes and endless cycles of information consumption at the palms of our hand. Take a look around and you’ll see eyes glued to screens of all shapes and sizes. It’s no wonder that the publishing world is struggling, and writers around the world raising doubts regarding the future of literature and the culture of reading. Are pen-to-paper books, real literature and novels going to be lost to us soon?
All hope isn’t lost, folks! There are young minds out there that have continued to carve out space for themselves in today’s world with their words and writing. Organisations like Under 25 are working to bring the youth back to literature in its evolving state and create a community that celebrates new art, opens-up a space for dialogue and sharing ideas through their Literature Festival.
Founded in 2014 by Anto Philip and Shreyans Jain, Under 25 created a network of young entrepreneurs and has grown into a media and entertainment company catering experiences for India’s younger generation.
Their first Lit Fest was held last year in Bangalore and was a huge success, drawing in over 800 people from around the country! “We had speakers like Durjoy Datta, Shaili Chopra, Roshan Abbas, Shamir Reuben, among others. The vibe of the festival was fantastic and the feedback received from the speakers as well as the attendees was extremely positive,” shares the Under 25 team.
The incredible reception is what inspired them to take the Under 25 Lit Fest to Chennai earlier this month. The IIT Madras crowd, speakers and attendees were thrilled with the event, which has only created more buzz and excitement about the upcoming Bangalore Lit Fest to be held on August 20.
Lit Fest 2017 will take place at CoWrks, and has a variety of events planned. Confirmed speakers are Mrs. Margaret Alva, Varun Agarwal, Preeti Shenoy, Aranya Johar, Shinie Antony, Madhavi Mahadevan and Jahnavi Barua, to name a few. There will be music performances by Aishwarya Suresh, and an Open Mic which can range from spoken word to music and stand up comedy.
“The Under 25 Lit Fest was born out of the intention to make literature more accessible to the youngsters of today. The definition of Literature has changed over the years and has come to include Spoken Word, Poetry, Music, Micro Fiction and many more things to the youngsters of today and we bring all these aspects together in the Under 25 Lit Fest, making it a very interactive and personal event, with something for everyone!” they say.
