Could The Technology Of Delhi’s New Water ATM Solve Our Water Woes?

In the hour of the needing clean drinking water and making it accessible to all, Delhi’s Connaught Place received a novel installation. It is a machine that produces water from the air around it – and for free! And for all that you know, Delhi might have turned out to be slightly lucky. While the device would normally produce 300 litres of clean drinking water, due to the high moisture content in the city’s air at the moment the water ATM is able to churn out 500 litres of water per day.

In collaboration with Israel-based company Water Gen, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has brought this new technology to India that has been conventionally used in the West. As per the process by which the water ATM produces water, a report by the Times Of India states, “The machine traps the moisture in the air and passes it through different filters to clear out impurities. Then, the water vapour is condensed using a coolant. After the water vapour is condensed, minerals are added to produce water.”

With 1 kilowatt energy, the machine can produce four litres of potable water. It is available in three sizes that correspond to its capacity of producing water – the smallest having a capacity of 30 litres, the medium sized of 450-500 litres, and finally, the large machine can produce 3000 litres a day.

The Charkha Park saw an inauguration ceremony by the Israeli Ambassador to India, Daniel Carmon, followed by crowds eager to taste the water from the innovative apparatus. The NDMC plans to situate the Water ATM in several numbers. Let’s hope that the self-sustaining technology spreads swiftly throughout the country.
