I recently made gulab jamun for the first time in my life. My cousin had come over and since she's much better at cooking than I am, I thought I'd learn a few skills from her. For me the idea of making gulab jamun at home was kind of intimidating but with her it felt effortless and quite exciting. Making something at home just for ourselves something that evokes memories of festivals, family gatherings, weddings and community was an endearing precursor to the Diwali season. Like me, this dessert is synonymous with family and celebration for most of us.
