A conjunction of mellifluous vocals, suave hoop-dancing, and intricate line animation, the music video for Sanjeeta Bhattacharya’s single, ‘Everything’s Fine’ is a grim reminder of how in reality our life and surroundings are far from fine. The video features a hula hoop freestyle by acclaimed-dancer Eshna Kutty, synced to Vinod Ravi’s lucid visuals.

A ballad honouring our now-abandoned ties to nature, ‘Everything’s fine?’ makes one introspect how we as a race have failed mother earth. Burgeoning capitalism, rapid industrialization, and our insatiable hunger to expand infrastructure have taken their toll on the environment around us. Human-wrought hazards like global warming, green-house emissions, and gentrification of sustainable townships into fuel-powered cities have exacerbated the planet’s plight.

Composed in memory of the lush, green neighbourhoods she grew up in, Sanjeeta reminisces about her fond childhood and being surrounded by nature. The Berklee alumni examines how a dreary jungle of brick and mortar lies in place of what was once a picturesque neighbourhood, studded with trees and fields. Across various verses brought to life by Eshna’s tasteful dance moves, Sanjeeta expresses concern over how our ignorance and hypocrisy are eroding the very planet that gives us life. Sanjeeta’s fluid vocals shroud her looming sense of concern over how today’s youth is growing oblivious to the rapidly devolving natural eco-systems around us. Her verses and emotion-evoking symphonies cast light on how our tech-centric, brand-oriented mindset has made us ‘plant-blind’, and how today’s generation can sadly identify more car brands than plant species.

Another subtle theme the single explores is that of exploitation. The song laments on how humans and corporate-umbrellas not only exploit nature’s abundance but also lesser-privileged humans, who despite having laid the bricks and foundation to every home, often lack a roof to sleep under themselves. The hands that build every factory, mill, and industry, almost never see a dime of profit from these establishments. Sanjeeta’s mellow vocals and the song’s atmospheric, nature-inspired background score have an ethereal tone and paint a beautiful picture in the minds of listeners.

Having been released a few-days post ‘world environment day’, the single’s more recent music-video has captivated many. Eshna’s effortless moves and Vinod’s minimalistic motion design collectively illustrate the beauty of Sanjeeta’s music. While the animation is smooth for most part, it does become turbulent at some parts to showcase the disturbing emotions certain sequences in the song carry. This beautiful medley of dance, motion design, and harmonious vocals is a wake-up call that encourages us to question our ignorance towards the suffering of nature and less-fortunate people around us.

The song begs the question of whether ‘Everything is fine’ or not.
