Few indie-proud artists in this country have managed to weave their way so seamlessly (and so quickly) into the hearts & playlists of our sonic omnivorous audiences as Nischay Parekh. Even fewer have excited. The Kolkatta-based singer/songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist toured his way across all the major gig circuits last year, blending the careening romance of a ‘boy-grown-up’ with indomitable songwriting sensibilities, and we made an attempt to show up at all the ones nearest to us.
As such, we’re feeling a tad more pushy than usual of our choice for playlist curator today. We got our current blue-eyed boy to dance to our tune and luckily for us, he returned the favour.
Scroll on to navigate the musical map of his world.

1. Half asleep, Half awake
Marvin is always on my mind. Especially when I’m about to wake up and start my day. Its like meditation. The walking bass lines and the beautiful harmony tells my body that the world is good to wake up to.

2. Breakfast in belly, Space in mind
I love the original. However, Gretchen Parlato and Lionel Loueke into cosmic realms. Pure inspiration.

3. Afternoon Quirk
When I feel a little too serious or uninspired, Deerhoof is an instant antidote ! What is this thing called love ? (cue fuzzed out guitars)

4. Sunset Swing
Some songs have that amazing ability to put you into a world all of its own. Koop are master craftmen and Yukimi just adds so much to anything that she’s involved in. Summer Sun is best listened to as the sun is turning a dull orange.

5. Moonrise Kingdom
I love Feist. This is the perfect nocturnal song. It’s got style, substance and everything else as well.

6. 7PM Groove
I’m a terrible dancer, but I love dancing.

7. Falling Asleep
Grizzly Bear have this great gravitas to their music. The force of gravity is the lullaby.

8. When it’s hard to sleep
“I boogied down gargoyle streets” - possibly the best lyric of the 21ist century. Add a quirky arrangement and boundless imagination to the mix and you have the perfect midnight snack.
