James Ferreira’s Khotachiwadi Home Is Now A Stunning Bed ‘N’ Breakfast

While ‘comfortable’, ‘clean’ and ‘well-connected’ were once the only parameters travellers held hotels and accommodation options to, the focus has now shifted to authentic experiences. “Don’t go there, live there” is every explorer’s new mantra, as they seek out lesser-known homestays, bed ‘n’ breakfasts and farmstays instead of high star ratings for properties close to the airport. We’re rooting for this more local approach - in terms of food, architecture, practices and traditions - to seeing the world. So, if you’re making your way to Mumbai soon, write to fashion designer and Khotachiwadi resident, James Ferreira. His stunning 200-year-old home is now open to weary travellers, with a side of eggs and bacon, and you’d be wise to book it way in advance.

47 G in Khotachiwadi (a heritage village in Girgaon) is one of the most famous addresses of the area. James’ house sees a flurry of visitors on any day and has set the stage for fashion pop-ups, art and culinary events - the designer’s way to keep this part of Mumbai culturally relevant, he told Brown Paper Bag. A collection of memories, artefacts and knick-knacks from around the world that lend the property immense character, his home can be likened to a patchwork quilt. Each individual piece is completely distinct from everything else but, by a stroke of magic, come together like a complicated, beautiful puzzle. The wine-coloured walls offset the yellow-tiled floor and are tied together by lovely little elements like glass lamps, plates, pots and planters in every shape and size you can imagine, as well as a slanted wooden roof.

What does your stay include? A private room (with or without an attached bathroom, depending on your budget), breakfast, James’ list of ‘things to do in Mumbai’, the opportunity to watch him create his stunning designs at his studio upstairs and close proximity to Ideal Wafers and its legendary cheese and tomato wafers. If you’d like to rent out the property for your next trip to Mumbai, write to James at info@jamesferreira.co.in for date availability and rates.
