For most Indians comfort food doesn’t come in the form of fried chicken or thick soups, instead the feeling of safety and home lies in a humble bowl of rice and dal. This is of course, Khichdi, a dish that unites our divisive population with its simple joy. Though for decades mothers have spooned it out lovingly for their sick offspring and sworn by its miraculous properties, it seems that now they’re ready to make this title official as India’s National Dish.

At the country’s largest global food show on November 4 - the World Food India exhibition - it will be unveiled as India’s superfood. In honour of this event, 800 chefs from across the country will pool their talents and create a dish of khichdi that will weigh in at a whopping 800 kilograms and will be submitted for a Guinness World Record.

Union Minister Harmsimrat Kaur Badal has mentioned that the ministry has devised a marketing plan to take khichdi to the world and with representatives from over 200 countries being in attendance at the food show, it’s definitely going to catch their eye. So hopefully from now on, people across the world will known what Indian mothers have know for centuries, nothing quite soothes the soul like a perfect bowl of khichdi.
