The many corrupt and super rich who angrily burnt and threw away all their ‘useless’ 500 rupee notes after demonetization have another karmic blow to face. They may have wasted a viable source of electricity.

After demonetization hit late last year a bright, Odisha youth thought there must be a way to retain some value from the old 500 notes. That’s why 17-year-old student Lachman Dundi decided to experiment with the notes’ silicon coating for his upcoming college project. The result? Well, the young innovator found that when exposed to sunlight he could generate around five volts per note.

“I tore up the note so that the coating is visible, which I exposed to direct sunlight. The silicon plate has to be connected to a transformer with an electric wire. This can help generate electricity,” he commented to The Times Of India.

According to The Deccan Chronicle if this energy is transferred to a battery it can maintain charge for up to 24 hours.

After apparent success at his college project exhibition Dundi was slightly underwhelmed from the lukewarm response he received and decided to write to the PMO about the success of his experiment. Surprisingly, the PMO took notice of Dundi’s plea for further research into this form of energy cultivation and has directed state government officials in Odisha to flesh out how this technique can be manipulated for good on a larger scale. Good thinking Lachman!
