With the recent surge in coronavirus cases in India, hospitals and medical facilities have started to run out of resources, with even vaccines, hospital beds and PPE kits falling short of the required number. Consequently, there has been a massive demand for the most sought after anti-viral drug, Remdesivir, which has often been termed erroneously as the ‘magic bullet’. While the drug has been deemed useful for patients with moderate to severe symptoms, it is in no way, a sure shot treatment for COVID.

In fact, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi on issuing new guidelines for treatment of COVID-19 cases among adults, has cleared the air around the uses of Remdesivir as a potential line of treatment for COVID patients.

It says...

Remdesivir may be considered only in patients with -

  • Moderate to severe disease
  • No renal or hepatic dysfunction
  • Who are within 10 days of onset of symptom/symptoms
  • Recommended dose- 200 mg IV on Day 1 f/b 100 mg IV OD for next 4 days
  • Not to be used in patients who are not on oxygen support or home settings
