Niranjan Karagi once saw school children in a playground filling up their plastic bottle from a likely unsafe tap. Fully aware of the various diseases caused by contaminated or dirty water, Niranjan couldn’t help but question: doesn’t everyone deserve access to safe drinking water? This led him to invent and patent the world’s cheapest portable water purifier – NirNal.

This reusable and eco-friendly product ensures to provide safe drinking water at affordable prices. It purifies water in multiple stages by using activated carbon and cotton along with a membrane and a netted mesh. It reportedly purifies water by up to 70% and can filter up to 100 litres of water.

“The main idea behind was to make it fit into a plastic bottle because almost everyone has access to that. This way we are able to use the discarded plastic bottles also,” Niranjan says. When NirNal is fixed to a bottle, it acts like a filter as you squeeze out the clean water. You can literally see the murky water turn clean with this filter. This easy to use product barely costs Rs. 30 and can be used by children above the age of five.

Niranjan, who hails from Belgaum, Karnataka, is a mechanical engineering student. He also won several accolades for his invention including Best Entrepreneur Award by Deshpande Foundation – Feb 2017, Best Entrepreneur Award by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) – Jan 2017, Yuva Shilpi Award by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

This imaginative invention has also garnered wide acclaim for its significant impact. Niranjan has managed to distribute his efficient product across several sectors of the society including the Indian military. He however considers his greatest triumph in providing school children an access to clean water through his innovation.

The story of NirNal definitely solidifies the enterprising nature of our country’s youth. With this also comes the ugly reminder that large sections of our very own society still don’t have access to simple things like clean water. But hope remains with entrepreneurs like Niranjan making sure no stones are unturned and all problems are solved.
