When A 100-Year-Old Woman From India Won Gold At The American Masters Games

If you’ve ever been too lazy to get to the gym or used a backache as an excuse to skip a jog, Mann Kaur is here to make you feel really guilty about it. The 100-year old Chandigarh native picked up the gold medal for completing the 100 metre dash in a minute and a half during the American Masters Games on Tuesday. She also won two further golds in shot put and javelin, Mann is clearly an all-rounder.

Her journey in athletics began at the ripe old age of 93 when her son Gurdev Singh encouraged her to take it up as a hobby. She has since been hard at work and has accumulated over 20 medals at the masters over the years. Her medals are her pride and joy “When she wins, she goes back to India, and she’s excited to tell others, ‘I have won so many medals from this country’. Winning makes her happy,” says Gurdev. She credits her diet of home food along with exercise and a complete ban on greasy fried food for her good health.

As the only female competitor in her category she always goes home with a win but that by no means diminishes the inspiring feats she performs and she’s a hero to many athletes in her field. “It’s fabulous to think maybe at 100 I’ll still be out here on the track doing something,” Marie Johnson, a runner in her ‘60s, told CTV News. If she keeps this up, the tremendous legacy of Mann Kaur is sure to go down in history as one of the most exciting accomplishments the world of sport has ever seen.
