Mohini Dey: An Indian Bass Virtuoso Capturing The Attention Of The World

While the Indian independent music scene is bursting with talent and these are truly interesting times when it comes to the level of experimentation, genre-bending and challenges that artists are willing to take up for the sake of their art, there are some artists that just stand out. Ones that can be deemed as prodigies and virtuosos in their own right.

One such stellar artist, on our radar, is 25-year old Mumbai-based bass guitarist Mohini Dey. Daughter of the bass player Sujoy Dey, Mohini started learning the bass guitar at the age of just 3 and was already in the studio and recording at the age of 10, making her one of the youngest bass players in the country at one point in time.

In an interview many moons ago, she had said, “When I was a small child, I was drawn towards my father’s bass guitar. He noticed my interest and started teaching me. Thanks to him and my entire family, I’m able to do what I really like. I want to be a versatile musician, just like my dad. I love playing funk, jazz, blues, Indian classical and fusion.”

Quite true to what she had wanted, the now 25-year-old has been described as the ‘Most Successful Musician Under 30’ by Forbes India and is the only female musican to be topping the ‘Top 10 Bassists in the 21st century’ list by MusicRadar with over 20 million views collectively on Youtube.

Not only that, but the young critically acclaimed jazz artist is also the current bass player in A.R Rahman’s backing band and has been a part of it for the past 8 years. Wanting to be a versatile musician, she constantly plays with other bands as well and is also a part of a Japanese Band called B’z and is a part of the Mohini Dey Trio with Gino Banks on drums and Rhythm Shaw on guitar. She has also worked with legendary artists Like Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan, Zakir Hussain, Ranjit Barot, Quincy Jones, Amit Trivedi, and many others over the years.
