Mumbai And Bangalore #MeToo Meet-Ups Are Happening This Weekend — Be There
With the surge of #MeToo allegations that have taken India by storm and have paved the way for women to share stories — some of which were kept under wraps for as long as numerous decades — on social media and other platforms that have come to be safe spaces for survivors. With the internet being at the forefront, a lack of physical safe spaces is something that needs to be addressed, and that is exactly what #MeToo meet ups cropping up across India are doing.
On October 21, 2018, a #MeToo meet-up was held in Delhi. The meet-up was organised with the aim to encourage survivors and supporters of #MeTooIndia to come together, support, interact and in the process stay abreast with the current happenings surrounding the movement and at the same time, find out how to contribute at an individual level. Following in the Delhi #MeToo meet-up’s footsteps, such events are also being organised in Mumbai and Bangalore. Both these events prohibit media coverage and are women only events.
Initially scheduled to be held at Gallery Maskara in Colaba, questions were raised about the Mumbai #MeToo meet-up’s choice of venue on the grounds of inclusivity and accessibility. Also, post the surfacing allegations pertaining to predatory behaviour against Abhay Maskara, owner of Gallery Maskara, the Mumbai meet-up is now scheduled to take place at Azad Maidan to make sure that it is accessible to one and all.
