Mumbai, Spend Your Weekend Hunting For Clues Across The City

“Do what the locals do.”

It’s a cliched statement, but it remains the go-to advice handed down from one traveller to another. It’s easier said than done though, especially since the internet has a curation of lists upon lists, for those willing to do research. Invariably, the second you’re back, you’re bound to hear, “Oh no, you missed out on this great local spot!” or, “Ugh, those spots are only for tourists. You didn’t really see anything.” Thankfully, we now have saviours from such moments in the form of online organisations, like Awestrich — a curator of travel experiences, that helps users book local experiences, with local people.

Today we’re here to talk about what they’ve got in store for this weekend, and Mumbai, you’re in for a treat. Awestrich has organised two events, ‘Parivartak’ and ‘Compass,’ spurred on by World Heritage Day, focussing on the state’s culture, that’s often ignored by its present occupants.

Kicking off the weekend is ‘Parivartak’, a heritage walk centred around Mumbai’s social reformers. The walk is about the people that have made Mumbai what it is today, and as Awestrich puts it, to “identify individuals who were social movements in themselves and who changed the landscape of their times and the fruits of whose efforts we are enjoying today.” Here you get to learn about one of the city’s pioneers in women’s education and town planning, and India’s first practicing female doctor, among a number of other individuals forgotten from our history books.

‘Compass’, on the other hand, is an interactive event that allows participants to explore the city through a clue hunt. The clues will be hidden across Mumbai, and solving a clue will automatically lead you to your next destination. Each team (two people per team) can proceed via any form of transport they deem necessary. So what are you waiting for? Grab a friend and sign up!
