Prolific hip-hop producer Ankith Gupta released a sample-heavy magnum opus, ‘Time Machine’ which featured a mammoth 27 tracks and 51 artists on it. The multilingual album had songs in seven languages — Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Dakhini, Bangla and Nepali apart from English and was distributed by Maajja (a first-of-its-kind platform for independent musicians that amplifies South-Asian talent globally). Time Machine is also Ankith’s most ambitious project to date and the 100th release in his discography. For his latest, he turned to Stephen Hawking (Hawking’s voice has also been sampled on the album intro, titled ‘Time Machine’) and a multitude of genres — from trap to lo-fi and drill, and a host of experimental sounds. The album also features exciting, up-and-coming rappers like A-Gan, Deon, Joshua Kirubagaran, Kainto and many more. “I like doing things which most artists won’t do, and this album is a reflection of that,” says Ankith. “With Time Machine, I’ve tried to amalgamate old and new schools of multiple genres ranging from trap, boom bap, lo-fi, hyperpop, drill, chill hip-hop and many more experimental genres,” he adds.

22-year-old rapper, instrumentalist and DJ Tirath Sandhu aka tricksingh released his debut project ‘Welcome To Class’ in an attempt to create a fresh sound by incorporating elements of his heritage while maintaining an international appeal with its bilingual nature. Claiming himself as a ‘lover of all things culture’, his discography is an amalgamation of his life experiences, travels and culture and is composed in both English and Punjabi. He says his appreciation of culture, won’t be limited to just the sound as he also plans on releasing a music video for each single featuring cultural elements. A promoter of all things homegrown, he says “Everything I wear is going to be from an upcoming homegrown brand. So that through my project, I can promote our local community and honour my roots, so that we can feel proud of it as a community instead of just impersonating the west.” Adding, “This is my attempt to make ‘culture cool again’.”

Jason Hines and Parichay Nathani are back with an alt-pop single about the thrill of meeting a new summertime fling every year. Following their melancholy break-up anthem, “plastic luv”, Tripped N Sat released their single “not a love song.” As the song builds the character gets introspective, questioning their relationship. Wondering why love can’t last more than a summer. He pleads, “Yeah I wanna make love now, I don’t wanna make a love song”. The chorus melody flows like waves on the beach, making you want to kick back and enjoy the exciting and flirtatious instrumentals. They believe this alt-pop song encapsulates their sound. Since meeting in 2019, Tripped N Sat has incorporated their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds to write, perform and produce their own music. By making records from across the world since 2020 via zoom sessions, while amassing over 70 thousand streams, Tripped N Sat is proving that they are in it for the long haul.
