There are times, especially in the middle of a workday, when all you can think about is packing all your bags and moving to a place which is off the grid, a place to soak in nature as you sip on your hot cup of tea or coffee (we don’t discriminate here) and maybe with rain pouring in the backdrop. If the very thought of it sounds too good to be true or perhaps even a perfect escape to channel your inner cottagecore aesthetic, maybe it’s time to take that little break that you’ve been putting off for far too long.
Completely off the grid, in a charmingly unhurried world without WiFi are Sinna Dorai’s bungalows — British Colonial style houses that are in the heart of tea plantations in the South of India. Sinna Dorai, the erstwhile term for an assistant manager of a South Indian tea plantation invites you into three bungalows that have a heritage-like classic interior with infinity pools and sunny verandahs. In the backdrop of the bungalows are the lush green tea plantations through which you can either cycle through or walk around as you experience wildlife in its natural habitat.
Of the three bungalows, the first is situated in the Anamallai Hills of Valparai, (translating from Tamil/Malayalam to mean ‘elephant hill’) a mountain range in the Western Ghats that spans Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The six-bedroom bungalow overlooks the Roti Kadai (Bread Shop) valley which is where the first bakery of the district is located and stands in the midst of organic tea fields with its 1940s vintage aesthetic.
The second bungalow is located in Mango Range (the origins of why the area is called so are unknown) of the Nilgiris. The three-bedroom bungalow, built in 1918, has an English and Scottish vibe to it and has two factories that are open for visitors viewing accompanying a 2500 acre plantation.
The third and last bungalow is Kadamane in Karnataka. Kadamane translates to mean ‘a house in the forest’. Originally built as a twin house for the two Sinna Dorais who planted all the tea that surrounds it, the nine-bedroom bungalow built in the 1930s is surrounded by 1,000 acres of tea, a factory, two churches, a temple, a hospital, and vast areas of forests and grasslands.
Quaint properties with a vintage aesthetic, good weather, lots of tea and the prospect of being far away from the hustle-bustle of the city make Sinna Dorai Bungalows the perfect getaways.
