Expressing a craving for ‘Shrewsbury biscuits’ is bound to receive a prompt ‘the ones from Kayani?’ in reply. That being said, it is indeed heartbreaking to know that the purveyors – Kayani Bakery – of the famous bickies have received orders to shut shop. The Times of India reported that although there has been no paperwork passed, verbal instructions for the closedown were issued by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB). The reason given for the same was that the bakery was running business without the required trade licence, since 2006.

Headed by Brigadier Rajiv Sethi, the President of PCB, a committee investigation of PCB along with Defence Estates Office (DEO) on Monday was conducted. Post investigation, it was concluded that Kayani Bakery, along with Kwality and Bagban, two other eateries on Dr Coyage Road, have violated the lease agreement by not renewing their licenses. “The establishments have not applied for change of purpose to commercially run the premises. They have been running their businesses illegally as we have not issued them trade licences since 2006. The board president has ordered them to close down for violating the lease agreement,” PCB executive officer D N Yadav told TOI.

On the flip side, however, Bagban’s owner Afzal Bagwan told TOI that in spite of applying for a trade licence every year, the property owner of the restaurant was denied one, according to this report by Scroll, he also claimed that ‘Almost 80% of constructions in the Pune Cantonment are illegal, but the board has decided to target only three.’ Aman Vij, owner of Kwality restaurant, said that not only was their trade licence renewed, they also did not have any hint about the inspection that was conducted. The owners of Kayani Bakery refused to comment.
