Roshini Kumar’s Queer Carnival is an experience not to be missed. The Queer Carnival will take place virtually through Zoom, and will be hosted on June 28 at 6.29 pm. The carnival, according to their invite, is a “celebration for Pride Month, this party is to get all the LGBTQ+ family and allies together to celebrate and feel the love amongst these chaotic times. [...] This is a safe space for all forms of expression, especially the queer community. No judgements, no biases, only love and acceptance.”

They also have a wide array of performance organised and curated by Roshini and Glorious Luna. Glorious Luna will be the host for the evening and Sundar Chan will be the DJ. The event will feature performances by Lush Monsoon, Durga Gawde, Dame Imfala, Rahul Manhas, Miss Bhenji, Magic Prat, Shivali Chhetri and Glorius Luna.

Amidst the varying degrees of agony we’re all experiencing due to the global pandemic, this is an incredibly unique experience ideated by Roshini Kumar to create a space of love and festivity for the queer community and their allies.

It becomes vital for us to reach out to other people in times where isolation and social distancing are a part of our everyday language of survival. This particular virtual event is also where Roshini herself is “coming out loudly” as she quips, as a bisexual woman.

Roshini Kumar is an art activist, fashion photographer, and an advocate for body positivity. On asking Roshini how the process of ideating Queer Carnival came together, she says, “It was a last-minute idea and something that was logistically possible in view of the crisis.” The idea of a celebration, and the sensory enjoyment we all collectively have had, is remarkable when we reflect back on it. Speaking about what celebration inherently means to her and what an ideal world championing empathy and inclusion looks like, she states, “Celebration could ease all our minds. Creating a safe-space and celebrating in it can be a part of a journey of acceptance too. Especially, for queer people, it is easy for us to showcase ourselves but it is not easy for everyone else around us to accept it.”

Roshini also aims to donate the profits she makes from the sale of the Queer Carnival tickets to NGOs that are alleviating stress on marginalised groups. Roshini says, “Humsafar has been doing a lot in terms of helping trans lives especially now,” when asked about who she plans to donate to. Roshini also talks about how spreading fact-based, value-neutral, information and awareness is necessary. She passionately mentions the immense influence the queer community has had on her when expanding on her identity and how she knew it was a comfortable time to openly come out. She adds, “My queer friends have helped me gain more clarity through my younger years.”

The Queer Carnival is a lovely joyful event that anyone can attend.

Not restricted by place or time, all of us can celebrate the rituals of Pride Month this Sunday, June 28.
