The idea of travelling entails so much more than simply visiting a new place — discovering its local delicacies, getting to know its people, and exploring all that its regional nature has to offer are some of the aspects that make it special. Eco-travel and tourism add another dimension to it and urges us to travel consciously; make memories for a lifetime, and at the same time, be respectful of the destination’s surroundings and people.
Gorukana Eco Wellness Centre is a precious eco-stay located in the BR Hills of Karnataka, and dedicates much of its time and energy to giving back to the local community, the Soliga tribe. Surrounded by a forest of cedar trees, Gorukana is home to ten cottages, one tree house, and one tent house. Not only is the place a wondrous stay, but its purpose and drive are also admirable.
Its Ayurvedic Rejuvenation Centre, launched as a sustainable community-based initiative, directs all its revenue to development drives for the Soliga tribe, which are implemented by the Vivekananda Girijana Kalyana Kendra. These steps encourage members of the tribe to feel empowered and work toward a sustainable livelihood. Some of them are also appointed as staff at Gorukana.
The duality of Gorukana’s vision and mission is difficult to say no to. Its beautiful, nature-clad area with a delightful homestay in the hills makes for the perfect location to enjoy a warm and cosy few days. Additionally, its respectful work toward the welfare, awareness, and education of the Soliga tribe is commendable. Establishments such as Gorukana, which put in the effort to give back to their surroundings, people, and land, deserve to be on everyone’s must-visit list.
