Note: Shooter Dadi Chandro Tomar died at the age of 89 on Friday, 30 April, 2021. She was fighting COVID-19 and was admitted to a hospital in Meerut after she complained of difficulty in breathing.
She subsequently lost the battle to the deadly virus.

It is not hard to believe when said that Indian women are determined to break barriers and reach new heights –– field no bar.

Chandro Tomar is part of this narrative. The 89-year-old on whose life the Bollywood film ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ is based has lived a life like no other. With an impeccable aim for targets, Chandro freshly began sharpshooting above the age of 65. While, of course, her talent is extraordinary, she believes her purpose of being a feminist role model is bigger, as mentioned in the New York Times.

Her accolades in shooting will tell you what she’s professionally worth, but her might and determination to move past the patriarchal society are what leave us speechless.

In conversation with the New York Times she said, “I wanted to encourage young girls everywhere to get into the sport and expand their horizons.”

Several medals and trophies later, too, she loves the art of shooting just as much. What strikes us is her will to push her boundaries –– as she did years ago while defying her male relatives and counterparts, and even now, having encouraged several children to join shooting clubs in the area (which, too, exist because of her).

We are in awe of Chandro Tomar –– because she dominates in a sport that would be considered unfit for women in India, but more so because she strives to change just that mindset.
