This Police Station In India Is Taking Creative Measures To Reform Their Inmates

Kannur, a small Keralan town, was ravaged last year by a series of six political killings and innumerable counts of violence as well as ransacking by clashing members of the CPM and BJP parties. However, the Chakkarakkal Police Station, located in Kannur, is fed up with these mindless attacks and have decided the best way to get local men to stop having brushes with the law is to educated them - whether they like it or not.

The Police Station’s first step was to make its atmosphere more inviting. By doing so they are encouraging members of the society to come and see their nature garden, exoctic birds as well as relax to classical music. This environment is not only used to de-escalate tension in the police station but to increase visitor traffic in the Police Station. This effort is designed to encourage more of the area’s residents to feel comfortable reporting a crime. If fifty people stop by the Police Station in a day, and only five report a crime, it becomes a lot more difficult for local goondas to figure out who reported a crime. In Kannur acts of violence are often followed by threats to kill or beat those who have the courage to report a crime. That’s why making the Police Station a safe and inviting place is of paramount importance.

Moreover, the Police Station is now outfitted with a library made up of almost 1,000 newspapers and books. Moreover, people are encouraged to donate or lend books to the station. There are even several sponsors that are actively donating periodicals.

People involved in narcotics cases are given informational books to read with related assignments, as to convert time spent in the police station from punishment to education. Many drug users are clueless about the nefarious side effects and addiction associated with substance abuse; so instead of staring at peeling walls or fighting with other inmates, reading up on the detrimental effects of drug use is far more of a productive and safe activity. In addition, many political peons and thugs commit acts of violence while intoxicated on either alcohol or drugs.By decreasing use of substance abuse, logically there is a chance of decreasing crime under the influence, which is often more vicious.

Inmates who refuse to read must plant vegetable seeds, for even if they refuse rehabilitation, they will at least have to contribute some overall benefit to society.

On July 8th the Police Station also received an audio-visual system along with a projector, so that educational videos on road rules as well as other integral societal laws when there are 5 or more inmates present. This serves to both educate unlawful citizens as well as to demonstrate the consequences of various crimes.

To see police truly invested in the betterment of criminals is a great day for India. Once again Kerala has taken progress into their own hands by taking the first step, and showing the rest of India how to follow.
