Use & Sow: Eco-Friendly Masks That Turn Into Plants

Mask up –– two words we have been hearing for what seems like an eternity but hold more value than ever. One of the essential tools to curb the spread of the virus is, as we know, keeping our masks up (all the way above our noses). A consequent issue masks cause, however, is that of inappropriate disposal and an increase in non-biodegradable waste, causing harm not just to the soil, but also various living beings.

Nithin Vas, a Karnataka-based environment activist and social entrepreneur has come up with a solution –– eco-friendly masks made of cotton rags that when sowed in soil (as disposal) will grow into tulsi and tomato plants.

While the mask cannot be washed and re-used, it saves the environment from being polluted by yet another use-and-throw mask. The cotton fibres degrade, and a plant comes to life.

Nithin said to ANI, “It saves you from the COVID infection or the infection one can contract from various viruses. But the most important thing we need to remember is that with the conservation of human beings, we also need to worry about the animals and other aquatic animals because these masks go and reach the oceans, polluting them and also harming the aquatic life.”

Remembering to keep a mask on whenever required is of utmost importance –– in that, we must not forget to prevent harm from being inflicted on those beings that are most likely to face the brunt of our actions. Nithin’s eco-friendly, seed-embedded masks are meant to prevent just that.
