Visit Offset Bookshop For An Adventure Through South-Asia

Offset Projects

When was the last time you visited a bookshop? Actually visited it? Physically. Spiritually even. All the bookworms out there know exactly what we’re talking about. We are referring to that feeling of being dwarfed by heaps of books, amidst the old, musty smell of yellowed pages.

The kind of feeling that makes you nostalgic about the present. We reckon that for the majority of you, this would appear as a distant reality - which, to be fair, isn’t as much a lucky guess as it is patent observation. The pandemic. So, as we sat scrolling through images of bookshops, vicariously living the dream, a certain bookshop took us by pleasant surprise

Offset Bookshop contains a diverse collection of photo-books from the South Asian region. This includes photo-books from across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Burma, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. It opens up beautiful vistas into each of these regions from the points of view of young practitioners, as well as experienced artists and veterans in the field. In 2020, while we sat scouring our bookshelves at home during a global pandemic, the Offset Bookshop was being set up and launched.

Offset Bookshop is an off-shoot of Offset Project founded by artist Anshika Varma in 2018, in New Delhi, India. The aim of this project was to open up collaborative networks between artists, photographers and creatives involved in the process of book-making.

They attempt to do this through a variety of ways including, but not limited to, workshops, artist talks, residencies, among others. It is their way of preserving the tradition of story-telling that is so inextricably linked to the past, present, and future of India.

The multimedia approach to book-making, alongside a focus on the South Asian region, taps into literature and photography that has remained overshadowed by the West for much of its existence. Offset Bookshop is, thereby, creating a space for these narratives as they are being created in real time.

So, for all those of you looking to take a much-needed vacation from your seemingly mundane lives, head over to Offset Bookshop to travel the world for a considerably cheaper fee.
