In Japanese culture, the humble chopstick is known as hashi which is a homophone for 'bridge'. In centuries past, ceremonial chopsticks formed a spiritual link between the human and divine realms, offering food to gods and thus inviting their presence into the meal. This symbolism persists even today, each Japanese family member often has their own pair, an intimate expression of care and respect not only for food but the tradition that shapes it.
It is against this backdrop that we find a most unexpected fusion: the COMET × NARU limited-edition sneaker, born from the creative synergy of cult-favourite sneaker label Comet and the acclaimed Naru Noodle Bar, which is listed among India’s top 50 restaurants. Naru, which began as a pop-up and quietly evolved into a full-time 20-seater ramen bar, is known for its its springy, in-house noodles, richly nuanced broths, and the warmth of Chef Kavan Kuttappa's engagement with his patrons, evoking a distinct and authentic Japanese dining experience.
Comet has rapidly emerged as a homegrown disruptor in India’s sneaker landscape. Founded in 2023 by Utkarsh Gupta and Dishant Daryani, the brand has made its mark through bold, narrative-driven designs. This collaboration marks a first for Indian streetwear — a sneaker born from the spirit of a culinary institution at the convergence of craftsmanship, identity, and story.
On the sneakers, Naru’s embroidered logo graces the side panel, while the heel tab features a playful monkey slurping ramen. A tactile detail is the chopstick holder integrated into the side, a subtle nod to Naru’s world. Hidden beneath the heel tabs lie the words 'Uzumaki' and 'Ajitama', secrets for the discerning eye. Cloaked in a sleek all-black palette with terracotta patterns, the shoe echoes Naru’s minimalistic chef uniforms.
That a chopstick holder should appear on a sneaker is, admittedly, unusual. It’s a detail drawn from the dining table and placed on an object made for the street. Despite being somewhat outlandish it works as a quiet link between two distinct worlds. It's food and fashion brought together through a shared sense of appreciation for craft and artistry of Japanese cuisine.
With only 400 pairs designed, the drop was launched exclusively at the Comet Bangalore store on Saturday, August 2. The rest of the collection has been released online and is priced at ₹5,899.
