Mudras, those intricate hand gestures you've probably seen in yoga, dance, or ancient sculptures are a language and conduits of energy, intention, and harmony. These movements, rooted in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, embody deep spiritual philosophies. Channeling the prana (life force), they designed to guide the body and mind into states of tranquility and awareness.
A Gurugram-based design studio took this language and reinterpreted it as compositional flow, which is the way a viewer's eye moves through and engages with a design, creating a sense of direction and visual coherence. The result was a sculptural furniture collection that evokes balance and harmony through its contours. 'Mudra' by Beyond Dreams was unveiled at Raw Collaborative last year.
Beyond Dreams, the design studio helmed by Anvi and Akshay Khurana is known for its ability to translate abstract concepts into immersive spatial experiences. With a keen eye for materiality and form, the studio pushes the boundaries of contemporary furniture by merging artistic expression with functional design. Their approach is rooted in storytelling and their creations carry a deeper narrative, inviting interaction and contemplation, which stands true for this collection as well.
The chair, for example, is constituted by soft, continuous curves that feel as if they’ve been sculpted by the air itself. The armrests extend like poised curtains billowing in wind but frozen in time.
The elongated silhouette and sweeping contours of the chaise give it a meditative quality. Its interplay of fluid lines and negative space evoke stillness and reflection.
The table in this collection plays with grounding and levity at the same time. Its base anchors it with a sense of stability, while the surface extends freely creating a contrast of weight and lightness through both form and material.
The room divider steals the show with its asymmetrical, biomorphic silhouettes. The contrast between the dark sinuous edges and the soft, muted textile panels enhances its dynamic presence. It articulates a spatial dialogue that's both playful and commanding.
The Mudra collection is a meditation on movement and balance. It masterfully employs the principles of spiritual symbolism in crafting tangible forms that create a new and intentional way to experience design. The statement pieces of the collection manage to invoke, to some extent, the same mindful engagement and reflection that perhaps the mudras incited in yogis centuries ago.
