A HG Roundup Of The Best Indian Artists Of 2016

The end of the year is decisively the time for all the “best of 201X” food, bars, music - you know the drill. This year, HG decided to celebrate the Indian artists that are truly breaking moulds and capturing unique spaces with each of their art forms. The works of the artists we’ve selected span across several mediums - illustration, photography, installations, and murals to name a few. A scan through the works even highlights some of the important events and incidents 2016 has seen. For instance, Tanya Singh’s doodles on the Indian currency instantly highlights demonetisation in India - a policy that has affected every single person in the country. Jitch’s work blatantly points to the outcome of the US presidential election, while Sadhna Prasad’s work “Under the Hijab” attempts to break stereotypes surrounding it, embracing art as a means of revolution. We’ve also seen India outside the boundary, with Hanif Kureshi at the London Design Biennale with his hand painted type installation for Chakra View.
