I guess growing up in a city dominated by stories of love, and its expression through design, would have an impact on any adolescence mind. Always inquisitive, imaginative, and straight up brilliant, as demonstrated by his IIT Alum status, 33-year-old Gaurav Singh is an Agra native who used his prowess in product design coupled with his quest to make sex more adventurous and fun to create a one-of-its kind bed, called a ‘LoveRoller’, especially designed to facilitate optimal love-making.
India’s unusual relationship with sex played in the back of Singh’s mind when he set out to achieve exactly this. The country that gave the world the Kama Sutra, decidedly one of the most detailed books ever written on the subject, now shies away from even the slightest mention of sex. Especially enjoyable, good sex that is fun for both people involved seems to be a subject the Indian society doesn’t want to touch with a pole. Dismayed by this, and eager to catapult India back into the land of good sex, Singh founded LoveRollers in 2016 in Delhi, manufacturing three distinctive beds that allow for more than 100 sex positions to be performed comfortably. The opportunity to pioneer the country’s growth in the bedroom and tapping into an unexplored business potential prompted Singh to quit his job and pin all his hopes on the LoveRollers.
“I saw how most tech developments focus on deep technology projects like ‘deep thinking’ and ‘deep networking’ but nobody thought towards making a relationship deeper. When it comes to lovemaking, ancient Indian gyaan has so much to offer. Kama Sutra positions take the experience to another level, but present-day beds and furniture help little in making those positions possible. So, I did extensive research, calculations, designing, trials, data collection, and testing,” Singh told YourStory.
One of the biggest challenges with mass producing a product that has a very personal and intimate use is to be able to appeal to people of all sapes and sizes. After extensive research, Singh managed to create the perfect angles and alignments that he was sufficiently satisfied with. “We needed a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, and crunched through a lot of user data for the designing. Extensive research went on the higher and lower arc that allows powerful thrusting during lovemaking”, Singh told YourStory.
Inspired by the vast knowledge afforded to us by traditional Indian texts, Singh strives to revolutionize sex in the average Indian bedroom. The beds come in 3 variants: a standard one, a smaller one to save on space, and a cleverly designed convertible variant that breaks off into two smaller inconspicuous blocks for couples looking to avoid awkward questions.
Apart from personal consumption, Singh also has his sights set on expanding to Hotels, Spas, and resorts to incorporate his design in their honeymoon suites. Being the only product in this space in the country gives the LoveRollers a lot of leverage when it comes to business opportunities. And even though international variations of the LoveRoller exist, Singh dismissed them as potential competition because he claims they weren’t made with the Indian body in mind, and that makes them inefficient in the Indian market. If all that good sex isn’t enough for you, the LoveRollers are also great for your neck and back muscles, and to top it all off, they help alleviate menstruation pain in women! Sex or no sex, that alone makes it a highly coveted product.
