From Indian princes who were obsessed with Rolls Royce to the classic white Ambassador that defined an entire generation of bureaucrats to the Premier Padmini, the iconic car that commanded the Indian car market during the 1970s and 1980s and even had Rajnikanth’s attention to the Standard Herald and the 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster to the Contessa and the Beetle; India’s love affair with cars isn’t new. It dates back to the days of princes, with no end to the obsession in the near future.

While I for one, don’t know much about automobiles, I still enjoy the old-world charm and vintage aesthetic of these beautiful cars. There are many whose love affairs and knowledge of vintage and classic cars know no bounds. Now a photographer on Instagram is documenting an era gone by through the classic cars of the past.

An ‘automotive nostalgist’ as he calls himself, Deepanjan Sarkar’s Instagram page is a deep dive into nostalgia, as he documents vintage cars and rare car finds that he stumbles across. From Ambassadors that were once fondly called the ‘kings of Indian roads’ and pretty much defined a generation to 1948 Buicks to 1947 MG TCs to 1948 Morris Eight Series Es to Premier Presidents to early models of the legendary Beetle; his page is an eye feast for car lovers and all those that love vintage and classic cars.

A look through his Instagram page is enough to transpose you back in time and relive the days when these cars were common sights on the roads and defined sublime luxury.
