What if you had the chance to design the public transport used by millions of Indians everyday? To convert them from the monotonous black-and-yellow fate they’re usually relegated to, what with their rusting interiors and greying, sometimes paan-stained surfaces that do little to lighten up a hectic day of travel to a visual feast. What if these vehicles were your canvas and the designs of your mind the impending art? No, this isn’t a unicorn trail. If you are an artist looking to be part of a public art revolution in the country, we have an update on that front.
‘The Benaras Project’; a design residency by Design Fabric; and 100% Uttar Pradesh, is calling out to Indian designers to create Taxi Fabrics; textile patterns inspired from indigenous cultures and symbols, which will then be fitted in the soon-to-be introduced electric rickshaws in Benaras. Considering the variety of exciting projects Taxi Fabric has already helmed (think the stunning Delhi rickshaw interiors inspired by Ghalib’s poetry, or the New Mumbai taxi design that took a visually stunning stance against avoidable blindness) since its inception two years ago, you can be sure this residency will be worth your while. The entries for this five-day-long and all expense paid design residency is open to visual artists, graphic designers, illustrators, fine artists and printmakers. The entries are open till 13th August, 2017. Upon portfolio review, three designers will be selected as the final participants of ‘The Benaras Project.’ The results for the same will be announced on 14th August, on Design Fabric’s website and social media platforms.
Benaras is on the front lines of climate change – susceptible both to flooding and heat waves, and suffering a severe air pollution crisis. One of the solutions to these challenges is replacing dirty diesel autos with clean and green electric rickshaws. ‘The Benaras Project’ hopes to create a unique, rich and engaging way to draw attention and excitement to e-rickshaw technology and how they can improve people’s lives; at the present and long into the future.
Do you want to be part of this rickshaw makeover? If yes, get your portfolio in order and apply today.
