For 58 years, Doordarshan, the Government of India-created public service broadcaster that aires 23 channels across the country, has had the same logo. Yes, we’re talking about the deep blue swirl with ‘Doordarshan’ nestled safely in the centre of it, in a large black circle. For the first time since 1959, the brand has decided to replace their iconic logo. Not just that – they’ve planned to source their new logo by hosting a logo design contest.

The decision is the result of the brand’s aim to target India’s youth, especially since approximately 65% of its population is below 35 years of age. Through their logo change, Doordarshan hopes to make themselves relevant to the young people of India, and to modernise in an effort to compete with the hundreds of broadcasters that are dominating Indian television.

The competition is open to all, and the deadline to submit your entry is 13th August, 2017. As if having your work be a part of perhaps the most historic television networks of India isn’t enough, the winner also receives a cash prize of INR 1 lakh. The only requirement? “The new logo while recalling the strong nostalgia associated with the DD brand, should reflect the aspirations of new India,” the contest description reads.
