When it comes to the world of visual arts, India is a relative newcomer. It’s only recently that the country’s artists, filmmakers and musicians have dared to step beyond the tried and tested formulae when expressing their ideas. With the emergence of this visual liberation India boarded a wild ride into the new age of art, something best christened as ‘New Media.’ Technology was less of a mystery and became so intertwined with all artistic mediums that an entirely new avenue of possibilities was awakened. The EyeMyth Festival is a pioneering force in this arena and between the 16th and 20th of August they’re back with ‘Future is Fiction’. Presented in collaboration with Unbox and Indian School of Design and Innovation, (ISDI) this year will be a stunning exploration into immersive storytelling and new media.

EyeMyth was a passion project a long time in the making. An ode to the love of film, the name itself is an homage to the iconic 9-second-long film by the eminent Stan Brakhage. Its festival avatar was first launched in 2011 and served as a platform for visual music at the UnBox Festival in Delhi. Over the years, they honed their concept and today it’s a festival of art, entertainment and new media curated by emerging and established artists worldwide to celebrate the diversity of audio visual content.

Last year’s edition was themed ‘Medium as Somatic Impulse’ and saw a partnership with the Japan Media Arts Festival as they investigated the possible definitions of new media at both a national and global level. Every year they aim to grow conceptually and this year they’ve expanded their repetoire to include everything from augmented reality public art, AR and VR film screenings to audiovisual music gigs and a conference on the future of immersive media and mediated realities in India.

Their goal is for experimental media to move away from the typical content and showcase socially relevant topics to the public in a whole new format. Whether it’s mental health awareness or the horrors of child marriage, at EyeMyth, the medium is the message. According to visual artist and game designer Avinash Kumar, India is poised on the edge of a revolution that’s been a long time coming, ‘There’s a gap and the state of visual arts is on an upswing thanks to technology. Right now there’s a great climate for its revival.’ he says.

EyeMyth is a collaboration of creators and storytellers, a platform where they can come together to innovate and explore the range of possibilities. This year we can look forward to many iconic events such as the Future Fiction screening of BAFTA nominated shorts, an Immersive Media Showcase and an augmented reality collaboration with the St+Art India Foundation. They’re inspired by Indian culture but are in no way bounds by its constraints, they salute the inventors, innovators and creators of the country and are constantly building towards a new horizon.
