It is no surprise that India is a land plagued with several humanitarian issues –– especially against women. Numbers will tell you that most of the violent and aggressive acts are performed against women, and one of the leading ones is that of sex trafficking.

The feature documentary ‘From The Shadows’ is one that will focus on just how grave the situation of child sex trafficking is. Instrumental in bringing out the importance of the issue, the documentary is in its final stages, but is in need of funds to reach completion, and hence, the team has opened themselves up to crowdfunding.

Producer Aliya Furniturewala says, “During the pandemic lockdown despite restrictions, child trafficking has been thriving which reveals the well-oiled nexus that continues to operate, only a counterforce and collaborative approach can stem this and we hope that our film can begin such a dialogue.”

“The average age of a girl getting trafficked has dropped from 16 to 12 years,” states the documentary. This fact in itself is enough to make us realise –– women of any age are at the possibility of a risk in this country.

Director Miriam Chandy Menacherry says, “Our film is different because it not only reveals the extent of institutionalised trafficking but also throws up solutions. The approach is to observe the ingenious ways in which women are tackling the issue.”

There is much that can be said to clarify the gravity of the situation and why it calls for utmost importance –– exactly what From The Shadows aims to convey.
